Seborrheic Dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition which is quite common and tends to cause flaky, whitish scales to form on the oil areas of the skin which include the scalp and ear. This skin condition can also occur without any redness on the skin. Seborrheic Dermatitis in children is known as cradle cap and it normally affects the scalp of the child. The cause of Seborrheic Dermatitis is considered to be a combination of oily skin and irritation from yeast called malessizia. This condition is considered to be hereditary and can also be caused due to stress, fatigue, weather extremes, oily skin, unhygienic conditions and obesity. Neurological conditions including Parkinson’s disease, head injury, and stroke can also cause Seborrheic Dermatitis.
Seborrheic Dermatitis is found in oily areas and mostly affects the scalp and ears; however it is also commonly found in the eyebrows, eyelids, and creases of the nose, lips and other parts of the body which contain folds. This skin condition is harmless and is often temporary and the symptoms include skin lesions, plaques over large areas, and greasy oily areas of skin, scaly skin with flakes which are whitish and itchy skin. It can be easily identified if one develops lesions on the skin.
One suffering from Seborrheic Dermatitis should always opt for shampoos which are used to treat dandruff and are medicated. These shampoos should be used daily as it helps to maintain hygiene and can help to cure the infection. Shampoos which contain salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole, or selenium are preferred.
In case of infants; one should gently brush the baby’s scalp with a soft brush or fingers to improve circulation and loosen the scales on the scalp. Gentle shampoos can be used on a daily basis and a soap which has medicated properties should be used to help reduce the infection. It is also essential to rinse off all the soap and keep the skin dry and clean. Using cotton clothes which can keep the baby cool is a good option. It is essential to maintain hygiene in order to get rid of Seborrheic Dermatitis completely.
